Foldit, a non-profit educational platform for teaching science, is an online game to solve puzzles by using scientific methods and scientific analysis of data. To make the project more exciting, it was integrated with a multi-player mode. The core team are responsible for overseeing the project's design, development and community building.
To date, the Foldit community, which consists of amateur researchers and laypeople from around the world, has contributed over 70,000 unique puzzle designs, achieved over . The Foldit puzzle design community continues to evolve, and the game continues to be improved.
Foldit's 'jigsaw puzzle' model is based on protein folding simulations of protein chains found in nature. This topology of chains from a protein molecule is the first piece of the puzzle to be solved. The user-friendly interface is intended to be inviting for both novice and advanced players, and provides accessible controls to allow anyone to contribute to the puzzle design process. The software is available free of charge, with the mission to "educate and entertain".
